Memorial Day began as a day to honor Union soldiers who died in the American Civil War. Since then it has expanded to include all war and military action-related deaths. It's sad to think how many wars we've since had to include. And we're still adding.
In observance of Memorial Day, the city and local towns will put on a variety of celebrations and events.
Rochester's annual parade begins at 10:30 a.m., taking its downtown route up East Avenue and then down Main Street.

Although not Memorial Day specific, the Rochester-Monroe County Freedom Trail Commission honors the USCT (United States Colored Troops) with "On Behalf of Those Who Lie in Yonder Hallowed Ground." The Town of Penfield holds its ceremony on Monday beginning at 10:30 a.m. Speakers, music, essays, and rose dedications will take place at Veterans Memorial Park at Penfield Amphitheater, 3100 Atlantic Avenue. For more information call 340-8655.

The Town of Pittsford's parade on Monday begins at 10 a.m. on Sutherland Street.
The Town of Irondequoit begins its two-day celebration on Sunday, May 25, with a parade at 5:30 on Titus Avenue. A gazebo concert with Gap Mangione follows at 7 p.m. A flag raising at 7 a.m. on Monday is followed by a 9 a.m. memorial service at Irondequoit Cemetery.
