Dozens of daring drivers will race their 10-foot-long motorcycles up a 625-foot hill at the 12th annual Poags Hole professional hill climb Sunday, August 17.

Hill climbing, which reportedly started in England in 1897, is one of the oldest and most popular spectator motorcycle sports in the word - last year's Poags Hole event drew a crowd of about 9000. The challenge is to see who can drive up the hill the fastest, or who gets the furthest up the hill. For reference, only four of the 74 drivers made it up the hill at last year's event.

In addition to the race, which starts at 1 p.m., vendors will sell food and motorcycle merchandise starting at 9 a.m., when gates open. Poags Hole is located off Route 36 near Dansville. Admission costs $15 (children 10 and under are free), and parking costs $5. Call 335-9260 or visit paogshole.com for more information.
