The Eastman School of Music announced yesterday that Ayano Ninomiya is the new first violinist in the esteemed Ying Quartet. The world-renowned quartet, which features siblings David (cello), Phillip (viola), and Janet (violin) Ying, had been looking for a new first violinist since previous member Frank Huang left the group earlier this year to become concertmaster of the Houston Symphony. Ninomiya came in second place in the 2003 Walter W. Naumburg International Violin Competition, and she has toured Europe and the United States performing in both solo and orchestral concerts.
In addition to her role in the chamber-music group, Ninomiya will join the faculty of the Eastman School of Music, where the Ying Quartet is the string-quartet-in-residence. She will make her debut with the Yings sometime this fall.
