CONCERT REVIEW: Big Bad Voodoo Daddy at Lilac Fest

By Frank De Blase on May 14, 2009

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy did that voodoo that they do so well in front of roughly 4000 people at the Lilac Festival last night. I've seen these guys about five time so far, and this was by far the best show yet. I had initially written them off as a Royal Crown Revue cover band, because, well, that's what they started out as. But man, how this band has tightened up. And it has added a little of that subversive edge I dig Royal Crown for. Each player in the horn section got plenty of face time and swung like a rusty axe. The whole band sounded wily, mighty, and cool. BBVD dug deep into Cab's cache (I'm so glad they did "Reefer Man") and knocked out those trying to cut some rug (or in this case, trying to cut some lawn).
