CONCERT REVIEW: The Tone Kings

By Frank De Blase on July 22, 2009

I love music on the street -- that's where it's from, after all. Even though the bagpiper playing on the corner of Broad and Exchange was part of those "God hates fags" groups, it was still nice to hear. But I wondered aloud: Does God hate a man in a skirt with a relatively phallic instrument in his mouth as well?

But there was plenty of love and blues down by the river in Aqueduct Park today for the City's noontime concert series. The Tone Kings were just laying it down as I strolled up. Guitarists Jim Gandoli and Adam Bradley were trading off solid-body love (the kind God loves) as people milled about in the sunshine. That skinny guy with the Santa beard and the ball-hugger shorts -- a.k.a. Festival Guy -- was there as well, ensuring that no one else got on the dance floor.
