OK, call off the search. I found Tina Turner's mojo. Sharon Jones has it. Jones and her Dap Kings blew the lid off Water Street Music Hall Saturday night in front of a frenzied crowd. Feet were stompin,' arms were flailin', booties were bumpin', and the whole joint was poppin' like Orville Redenbacher in Hades.
The Daps gave a brief warm-up before Jones flew up on stage to deliver a knock-out punch that lasted for almost two hours. This Brooklyn-based queen of soul bounced from one end of the bandstand to the other like a rhythm and blues pinball. The tight horns, choppy guitars, and deep-dish groove from the rhythm section were spine-tingling and -cracking, and Jones was relentless and charming in the first degree. Her singing was powerful and merciless. God, what a voice -- and what a class act. It's safe to say a lot of Rochesterians left the show with a new favorite band. I know I did.
YOU GUYS RULE! Awesome show, Awesome time, I LOVE seeing you guys get props <3 Stay sexy!
