The Grievants wailed animated and agitated with an angry and angular set Thursday night at the Bug Jar. The tunes weren't so much tunes as they were flammable episodes, vignettes of veritable violence. If you look and listen past the sonic assault, there's a band that is imaginative and on the brink of dissonance; it's right up to the edge. Sort of like At The Drive In, but riskier. This band is wild.
The crowd Friday night at Montage Music Hall was small but extremely enthusiastic. I rolled up as Junction 5 was dishing it out heavy and varied. Try and collar this band with a single definition or genre and it'll slip right out of it.
Sponge took the stage like a quintet of welterweights. The sound was both thick and sharp. I blame that on a soundman who knew what he was doing, and the bass player who attacked his instrument more like it was a guitar. Singer Vinnie Dombrowski didn't punish those who were there for those who weren't, and worked the room hard right down to individuals, including two seventh-grade school teachers for whom he bought a round after he singled them out to sing along with him. This band still cranks.
