They were generating a mushroom cloud of steam heat last night at the Bug Jar for what was supposed to be the UV Rays' last hurrah. Singer, leader, co-conspirator Kevin Wilcox is moving to Las Vegas with his lovey-dovey this week to work with atomic energy in some way. Last night's show was a sad and proud moment for this frozen town.
The band has always drawn a decent crowd, but it had to take the finality of Wilcox's impending adios to ignite the energy at last night's shindig. It was an explosion of limbs from the moment the band hit the stage. There were frequently more feet in the air than heads and hands as The UV Rays pounded out hit after hit. Wilcox anointed the faithful with beer and extolled wisdom with equal parts insanity and insight, introducing one tune as being about getting high with a raccoon in the forest.
The band kept pace with him, slashing away recklessly, gleefully ending with "Party Pat," Wilcox's ode to his guitar-playing buddy set to the music of "Monster Mash." Don't sweat it if you missed out; the band is playing this Friday at Boulder Coffee on Alexander. Christ, that's a quicker reunion than The Who.
But wait, there's more: OC surf/punk godfathers Agent Orange pulled up as The UV Rays were wrapping up in a cloud of steam (I barely got off any pictures, what with my fogged lens and all). There was plenty of fight left in the crowd as the trio --- and then a quartet for a thundering and swift take on "Misirlou" toward the end of the set --- splashed and twanged with frequent bursts of good ol' breakneck hardcore. From Dick Dale to The Dead Kennedys, and whitey's on the moon.
