I'll begin the festival by diving right into the fire with trumpeter Jeremy Pelt at Montage Grille (6 & 10 p.m.). Pelt and his band are as hard-driving a hard-bop unit as you'll find at this years XRIJF. Then I'll head over the see Gladys Knight at the Eastman Theatre (8 p.m.). She's one of the greatest soul singers of all time and I can't wait to hear her interpret her classic repertoire live.
I hope to make it on time for the 9:30 show at the Lutheran Church, where the Oberg/Petrescu Quartet will be playing (also at 7:30 p.m.). Marian Petrescu is a stunning pianist, possibly the best at this year's festival. I've heard that guitarist Andreas Oberg has had visa problems and that violinist Christian Howes may substitute for him. It should be an excellent show either way.
A great way to end every night is by trying to squeeze into the bar at the Rochester Plaza's State St. Bar & Grill where the superb Bob Sneider Trio hosts a the jam session (10:30 p.m.). You never know which of the festival's performers might show up for some after-hours action.
