This platter screams Fat Possum, except for the pretty female vocals. Ex-Squirrel Nut Zipper and neauveau swamp blues master Jimbo Mathus dragged Mississippi Fred McDowell disciple/guitarist Melissa Swingle and drummer Laura King (of The Moaners) into the studio. Not just any studio, but the former Money Shot Studios of Fat Possum Records fame, in Water Valley, Mississippi; where Junior and R.L and T-Model once raved.
The howlin' brat to emerge from these loins is the duo's Blackwing Yalobusha. In spirit and attitude it's the blues. But in its simplicity and tone it's --- dare I say it? --- pop. Fat slide guitar over primal beats with casually disaffected vocals to tell the tale make this a blues record like you've never heard, a pop record you should.
