I have to apologize to all living jazz musicians; the album that's been knocking my socks off for the last two weeks was recorded in the mid-1960's. That's when the great baritone saxophonist Sahib Shihab met up with the superb Danish Radio Jazz Group. In a career that stretched from the 1940's to the 1980's, Shihab did stints with Fletcher Henderson, Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie and others. After traveling to Europe with Quincy Jones' band in 1959, Shihab decided to stay. The CD not only captures his distinctive style on sax and his aggressive, breathy flute technique (on "Harvey's Tune"), it also features Shihab's advanced compositions, like the gorgeous "Tenth Lament" and the kinetic "Mai Ding." On the latter, before playing his delicious baritone lines, Shihab turns in a wonderful cowbell solo. This man can do it all; on the last track Shihab delivers a smooth vocal on "Little French Girl."
