What is the sound of three hands slapping? The answer to the age-old question can be found on the new album by three of the world's greatest bassists. It comes on Miller's title track, when he, Clarke, and Wooten out-slap each other in a sublime funk-fest. The combined bass cred here is ridiculous. Clarke helped revolutionize the electronic bass over three decades ago as a member of Return to Forever. Miller and Wooten are two of the strongest of the crop to emerge in the post-Pastorius era. "Thunder" features touches of acoustic arco beauty (Clarke) and fretless ethereality (Miller), but for the most part it's three masters of four strings. All contribute excellent compositions - from ballads to fusion tunes - designed to exploit the instrument's possibilities. Chick Corea guests on one track, George Duke on two, but it's the three low riders who will keep you coming back for more.
