Animal Collective "Merriweather Post Pavilion"

Animal Collective's latest effort is a pop album seriously bent on the atmosphere of a bustling natural world. Here, vocals most often resemble whale songs, while whirs and clicks, the layering of synths and machine-sound samples, evoke crumbling concrete empires. Pulling its name -- and I'm sure a healthy dose of inspiration -- from an outdoor venue in the group's native Maryland, this record hits the pop high notes of California sunshine while paying homage to the cacophony of true silence: breathing, photosynthesis, the nervous rustling of dust, and the Earth's inevitable rotation.
