Ever since I heard his superhuman guitar solo on Chuck Mangione's "Feels So Good" in 1977, I've been waiting for a great album from Grant Geissman. It's here. "Cool Man Cool" contains 14 of the breeziest, catchiest, and yet most intricate original tunes you are ever likely to hear. It also boasts superb musicianship, top-notch guests, and the hippest cover art (by Miles Thompson) that I've seen in years. Geissman's ex-boss Mangione contributes some of the most beautiful playing of his recent career on three cuts; Chick Corea adds his touch to one. Elsewhere, Patrice Rushen, Russell Ferrante, Tom Scott, and others join the fun. Geissman writes tunes with great heads and challenging chord progressions. He is still every bit as stunning on acoustic and electric guitar in a range of styles that includes Flamenco-flavored, Django-inflected, and impossibly complicated straight-ahead jazz. It's been a long time, but "Cool Man Cool" is worth the wait.
