If revenge is a dish best served cold, then Shadows Fall's "Retribution" is a disc best played loud. On "Retribution," Shadows Fall continue its tradition of sonically diverse metal, incorporating the band's trademark elements, such as tempo changes, the occasional acoustic flourish, and a wide range of vocals that run the spectrum from singing to growling to screaming. Although the album still sounds unmistakably like Shadows Fall to dedicated fans, there are some surprises in store, such as the mega-heavy, blistering cover of Bob Marley's "War." Yes, Shadows Fall covers Bob Marley. Overall, "Retribution" admirably accomplishes the task that many metal fans put forth to their favorite artists: stick with tradition whilst branching out in new directions.
