Bassist Stanley Clarke is best known for reinventing the electric bass with Chick Corea's "Return To Forever" in the 1970's. On his excellent new album he displays his mastery of acoustic bass in a more subtle context. His trio includes fellow RTF alumnus and long-time associate Lenny White, whose superb drumming punctuates every cut. Adding to this symbiosis is keyboard wonder Hiromi who, like Clarke, has carved a niche in electronic fusion. She proves here that she is equally adept at acoustic piano. The repertoire is nicely varied, with standards like "Someday My Prince Will Come" and originals like Clarke's ecstatic "Paradigm Shift (Election Day 2008)." On the final cut, the trio borrows a page from the Bad Plus with a delightfully subversive rendition of Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Under The Bridge." Clarke, Hiromi, and White solo beautifully throughout, but the highlights of this album are the many wonderful passages when the three musicians react to each-other's playing, eliciting inspired responses at every turn.
