Pianist George Colligan already has a solid reputation as a top sideman from working with Cassandra Wilson, Ravi Coltrane, and others. "Come Together" may not be his first album as a leader, but it should be the one to pull him into the spotlight. Colligan is a brilliant pianist, displaying dizzying chops and a superb sense of adventure on every excursion. He's also an excellent composer, contributing eight out of 10 tracks. Several of his compositions -- "Reaction" and "To The Wall" -- involve somewhat dissonant harmonies and complex rhythms, forcing his trio out of any possible comfort zone and into a vortex of rewarding exploration. The title tune by The Beatles always contained elements of old-time boogie-woogie; Colligan transforms it into a full-tilt honky-tonk romp. Bassist Boris Kozlov and drummer Donald Edwards are a first-rate supporting crew. Kozlov is showcased with a solo worthy of Jaco Pastorius on a great tune whose title captures the album's essence: "Uncharted Territory."
