With no shortage of fine jazz guitarists, it takes something special to emerge from the crowd. Roni Ben-Hur has found it. He plays beautifully on straight-ahead standards like "I Got Lost In His Arms," "A Sleepin' Bee," and "You Art There," but he's obviously not satisfied to release just another terrific jazz guitar album. "Fortuna"'s knock-out cuts are the ones that transport the listener. On "Modinha," by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Ben-Hur's excellent septet --- Ronnie Mathews, piano; Rufus Reid, bass; Lewis Nash, drums; and Steve Kroon, percussion --- conjures an ethereal atmosphere for him to sail over. But it gets even better. "Granada," by Isaac Albeniz, is breathtaking in its evocative rhythms and textures, all gorgeously traversed by Ben-Hur's classically oriented playing. He contributes only two original compositions, but Ben-Hur writes with a swagger reminiscent of Lee Morgan. With its catchy chorus, his "Guess Who" could have been a hit in the 1950's.
