Of the two great Cuban pianists who played at the 2010 Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival, Hilario Duran was the less flamboyant. While Chuchito Valdes got most of the attention, Duran played a superb set with one tune that's haunted me since I heard it. On his new album, "Motion," that tune, "Havana City," provides 10 minutes of glorious, evocative music. From the opening strings and longing vocal by Joaquin Hidalgo, the music flows from mid-tempo rhythmic dance to exquisite refrain. I only know Havana from films, but somehow this tune seems to capture all of the bittersweet feelings of a transplanted Cuban. The compositions that surround this masterpiece are also wonderful explorations of the Afro-Cuban idiom, with the exception of "Tango Moruno," a brief excursion to Argentina. The complex rhythms are beautifully handled by drummer Mark Kelso and bassist Roberto Occhipinti (and Jamey Haddad, percussion, and Luis Orbegoso, congas, on one track each). At the center of it all is the masterful rhythmic playing of Duran.
