The new album by Rochester's favorite jazz violinist, Billy Bang, leads off with an unusual delight. Bang, who is known for playing on the wild side, offers a straight-ahead standard, Stuff Smith's "Only Time Will Tell" and pulls it off beautifully. His own compositions include the playful "Dance of the Manakin," the more edgy "Dark Silhouette," and "Jupiter's Future," which is dedicated to Bang's one-time band leader, Sun Ra. The most notable original is the beautiful 20-minute-long title tune, featuring wonderful extended solos by Bang, James Zollar (trumpet), and Andrew Bemkey (piano). Coming from Bang, a Vietnam veteran, "Prayer For Peace" is a powerful musical message. But the most engaging track on the album is Bang's rendition of the great Cuban song "Chan Chan" by Compay Segundo. Made popular as the opening tune in "The Buena Vista Social Club," the song is every bit as hypnotic here. Filling out Bang's excellent, cohesive band is the rhythm section of Todd Nicholson and bass and Newman Taylor-Baker, drums (with Milton Cardona and Joe Gonzalez providing extra percussion on two tracks).
