Old habits die hard. Put on a jazz quartet CD and many listeners will wait for the guitar or saxophone, or another traditional lead instrument, to enter. But what if the group is led by the great young British bassist Orlando Le Fleming and his drummer is the equally superb Antonio Sanchez? Every inch of this recording speaks eloquently for the art of the rhythm section. As for those traditional lead instruments, add the superb saxophone of Will Vinson and the wonderfully distinctive guitar style of Lage Lund to the mix and you have one of the strongest debut albums of the year. The fifth star is the composing talent of Le Fleming, who wrote all six rhythmically labyrinthian tunes. Le Fleming has been in New York for the last seven years after building a reputation as one of the top bassists in England. After playing with Billy Cobham, Jimmy Cobb, David Sanchez, and others, he is more than ready to claim some of the spotlight.
