Beck "Modern Guilt"

Beck's full of questions on his new album: "How can I make new again / what rusts every time it rains?" "So many people / so many people / where do they go?" "What makes the soul of a man?" "Who's gonna answer profanity prayers?" He doesn't offer answers, but that's
OK; it's always been more about the trip anyway. This time around, the trip comes in the form of 10 well composed, beat-driven songs, co-produced by Danger Mouse, who also provides beats, keyboards, and "sounds" on most of the tracks. The songs are often beautiful and sometimes delicate, as are Beck's vocals, which tend to dip into melancholy. A sad lament called "Volcano" relates the story of a girl who jumped into one; Beck likens it to the womb of the world. On the title track, he admits "don't know what I've done / but I feel ashamed." That's modern guilt for you: do the deed, feel ashamed, but it ends there. Unless you write a song about it, in which case, that's probably atonement enough.
