I don't think that anyone would ever describe the Counting Crows as groundbreaking or cutting-edge. Even a song like "Mr. Jones" was just a typical mid-90's pop-rock anthem. But after a six-year hiatus from album releases, the band's latest disc, "Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings," might just change that opinion. It's a double-album concept on one disc; the first half is rock-based music for a night on the town, and listeners can nurse their next-day hangovers with a little acoustic music on the second half. The idea has potential. The best part about the album, though, is that it's released in 2008, which means every tune is available online. In other words, you can bypass the throw-away songs that fill 90 percent of the album, and just select the few worthy ones, like "Los Angeles" and "On a Tuesday in Amsterdam..." With the wait and the concept behind the disc, you kind of wish the band had chosen different songs that didn't seem swept up from the cutting room floor back in 1994.
