Rochester's Ed Repard is like a rock 'n' roll orphan in reverse; there is no shortage of scenes with open arms willing to give his music a loving home. And you can easily see the kid blossoming with the punks or the garage kids, or the rockers or the jazzers. And yet despite the love El Destructo stands alone. And for the 15 cuts on Cumbre Vieja he stands apart and above as well. The album drips with a kind of Velvet Underground/Television nonchalance, and classic rock swagger. The songs are plenty wild 'n' urgent, at times threatening to break loose --- and they probably would --- if it weren't for El Destructo's casually contagious patience. Spin this platter and some of this cool will assuredly rub off on you.
