It's a pop album, complete with catchy hooks, a lot of "oh"'s and a few "na na na"'s. But, Eric Hutchinson's "Sounds Like This" is one pop album that won't end up in the used bin at the local record shop in three months. With a wave of singer-songwriters who've ditched their Advertisementacoustic guitars in favor of the piano, Hutchinson stands out largely because of his blues-based music with hummable melodies. There's the punchy groove of "Ok, It's Alright With Me," which seems like an old school soul tune with a new pop flavor. "You Don't Have To Believe Me" has enough groove to hang comfortably with any r & b classic. The most hit-worthy tune, "It Hasn't Been Long Enough," builds up to a saxophone solo near the end, taking a lesson from the Lou Reed school of song writing. This album is drenched in jazz, blues, soul, and funk - and Hutchinson has put it into pop in his own way.
