Oozed from the loaded vaults of Target Video, chaotic early footage of San Francisco's drug-damaged noise-freaks Flipper stumbles about the television screen, shattering senses and causing a general ruckus. Having more in common with New York's no-wave nutcases than the speedy Cali-punk scene from which Advertisementthe group hailed, Flipper numbs the mind with plodding nihilism before brutalizing the consciousness with clamorous insanity. The 16 songs gathered here are alternately abrasive and injurious, pierced with moments of brilliance and compelling chanting. The band is even more out of tune live than on the records, at times seeming more interested in their drinks than their instruments, but the whole thing comes off as a extraordinary mess, both hard to watch and hard to turn away from. Flipper is certainly not for everybody, and the sound quality varies across the 3 shows compiled here. But the inclusion of classic filth like "Shine" and "Sex Bomb" makes this DVD indispensable to the modern weirdo.
