Even though Snoop's been in the music business for almost two decades, he's never allowed himself to sound old or stale. "Ego Trippin'" continues that streak. Snoop takes the style approached with "Drop It Like It's Hot" with the new disc; take 80's synth-club beats, speed them up, and lay down a slick, calm rap overtop. Repeat. About 20 times. While the overall feel of the album doesn't tire (it's a more casual, relaxed hip-hop album than most of what's out there now), it is a bit bloated. Most of the tracks are fine, but there are a few that could have been omitted. Credit goes to Snoop for the two "surprise" tracks here, the country-rock hybrid "My Medicine" (a tribute to Johnny Cash), and "Cool," which sounds like an 80's-era Prince outtake. Every rapper today should be taking a page from Snoop's book; there's a reason he's stayed relevant for so long.
