Sixteen years is a long time to wait for a new album, but B-fans can rejoice; the wait is over, and it was well worth it. "Funplex" not only sounds exactly like the B-52's did 20 years ago, it sounds better. Guitarist Keith Strickland cranks out heavy, grooveable electric guitar riffs you'd never expect, and Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson's vocal harmonies are, as always, spot on. And it's just been far too long since I've had the indelible Fred Schneider yell, well, anything at me. Thematically, the B's stick to what works, jamming out quirky little rock/pop songs about being naughty ("Deviant Ingredient"), future love ("Love in the Year 3000"), and even post-relationship bliss ("Dancing Now"). Up-tempo songs "Pump," the title track, and "Keep This Party Going" are among the best on this disc, though there are no clunkers here. "Funplex" is great; it updates the B-52's sound for the 21st century, and shows that the B's have got plenty of party left in them.
