CLASSICAL: Young Artist's International Piano Competition (8/2)
By Brenda Tremblay on Jul. 30th, 2008
In China, manufacturers roll out a new piano every day. Asian passion for classical music may explain why nearly half of the competitors in this year's Eastman Young Artists' International Piano Competition come from East Asia. There's mystery in the piano. A single player can cover an astonishing range of emotions. When you line up some of the hottest young pianists in the world, pull in judges, and dangle $4000 plus a full-tuition scholarship to attend the Eastman School, anything can happen. If you've got room in your schedule this week, slip in to check out the competition. Most performances are free (except for the concerto event and winners' concert, $6-$12.) The first round kicks off Saturday at 1 p.m., and the winners play August 9. See the complete schedule at esm.rochester.edu.
