You know, I was just gonna say how much instrumental bands draw you in because the lyrics, storyline, mood etc, are all set by the listener. But then I jump on Filthy Funk's website and lo and behold, this slick, funky, exploratory jazz trio is in search of a singer; a soul singer to be precise. Perhaps it's Black August's Danielle Potter, who guested on the band's version of "Summertime," that planted the idea. Will this change the band? Absolutely. However, the interplay between guitarist John Viviani and whoever makes the cut should be interesting. Viviani's playing is dense and effects-laden and often reminds me of flight.

Filthy Funk plays Friday, July 18, 9 p.m., at Dubland Underground, 315 Alexander St. 232-7550.
