Let's face it, we're never going to get another band like My Bloody Valentine. Or Jesus And Mary Chain, Slowdive, or any of the other imaginative shoegaze groups that briefly captivated the British press and American underground in the early 90's. In what might yet prove to be a wise move, New York City quartet Dirty On Purpose revisits the shimmering, all-consuming electric guitar wash that those aforementioned bands made famous, even though it's not exactly fashionable. The question is, why? At its most engaging, such as "Audience in the Room" from latest album "Like Bees," Dirty On Purpose suggests a sincere passion for the sound it expects us to get behind. Mostly, though, the band seems content to chase an established style without bringing anything new to the table. Whether or not you hear fresh twists here, this show should satisfy your shoegaze fix.

Dirty on Purpose plays with Auld Lang Syne and Mass Solo Revolt Saturday, June 7, 9 p.m., at the Bug Jar, 219 Monroe Avenue. $8. 454-2966.
