Yup, it's more of those inaudible gargled-with-bleach vocals that have all but replaced singing, and guitars so distorted that they're actually soft. Maybe I've had my fill - and I have a hard time accepting anything heavy beyond Motorhead - but Misery Signals' drummer, Branden Morgan, is the shit. This dude power-pedals the bottom end and accents the band's neck-breaking dynamics. His playing is fascinating, versatile, and exhausting just to hear. Morgan's two arms are saving this band from merely blending into this incredibly crowded genre.

Misery Signals plays with As I Lay Dying, August Burns Red, and Evergreen Terrace Monday, May 12, 7 p.m. at Water Street Music Hall, 204 N Water Street. $17-$20. 325-5600.
