POLITICS: Dems name their candidates - except for county exec

For Monroe County Republicans, this week's party convention was a time to celebrate Maggie Brooks' re-election bid. For Democrats - who are still seeking someone to oppose Brooks - the convention was a time to show unity. At last night's convention at the Unite union hall, everyone from party leaders to the rank and file seemed eager to put the party's often-fractious past to bed.

The Democrats named candidates for nearly every position on the November ballot, and there was no opposition. The only potential tension had been for one of the four Rochester School Board seats up for election this year. Incumbent Willa Powell was facing a strong challenge from Keenan Allen, but Allen announced early in the evening that he was pulling out of the race, saying he didn't want to divide the party. "It was a very magnanimous decision on his part," said Powell, "and I'm sure a difficult one for him to make."

Allen's withdrawal doesn't guarantee unity, though; more than a dozen people had been interested in running for the School Board, and some may try to force a primary. In addition, St. John Fisher professor Jim Bowers has already said he wants to run a primary campaign against Lovely Warren for the northeast district City Council seat. At the Democrats' convention last night, Rochester Mayor Bob Duffy backed the slate of nominated candidates and said he won't support anyone who forces a primary.

The Democrats' slate for major positions at this point:

Family Court judge: Sid Farber

Gentlemen:

After reading your article above, it seems as if you and I were at two different conventions last night, but I know that's not the case --- because I saw you there (at least one of you).

I find the following statement to be absolutely amazing: "At last night's convention, everyone from party leaders to the rank and file seemed eager to put the party's often-fractious past to bed." Again I say, your statement is nothing less than amazing, especially when considering that I talked with at least 25 or 30 Committee members who were complaining about the so-called "new" convention procedures; manners in which the designating process was "rigged", and about the obvious deals that had been made --- with the blessings of political "bosses" and their cronies.

So, your reporting reflects the apparent fact that you chose to speak only with and/or pay attention to the "bosses" and others who feigned so-called "unity", which represents the message that they wanted you to carry, and as usual, you carried it!

You can bet your sweet by-line that "Allen's withdrawal doesn't guarantee unity..." In addition to myself, I know of at least two other Board candid
