This week's calls to action include the following events and activities. (All are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.)
Muslim doc
Nazareth College's Center for Interfaith Studies and Dialogue will screen Mara Ahmed's documentary "The Muslims I Know" on Thursday, November 6, at the Shults Center at 7 p.m. The film looks at Pakistani-born Muslims living in the post-9/11 US. Donation: $4.
Veterans Day events
More than a dozen faith, anti-war, and veterans support groups will sponsor Veterans Day activities that will begin with a Reading of the Names of the war dead. The event is at Washington Square Park (weather permitting) at 3 p.m. Speakers at First Universalist Church, 150 South Clinton Avenue, at 4:30 p.m., and dinner by Food Not Bombs at 6 p.m.
Zero waste
The Rochester chapter of the Sierra Club will present "Zero Waste or Pretty Darn Close," showing how families, businesses, and communities can eliminate waste on Thursday, November 6, at Brighton Town Hall, 2300 Elmwood Avenue, at 7 p.m.
Ren Square update
The board of directors of the Main and Clinton Local Development Corporation will hold a meeting on Renaissance Square's operating plan on Thursday, November 6, at the Auditorium Theater on East Main Street, at 9 a.m.
Teens speak out
The Center for Teen Empowerment will hold its 5th annual Rochester Youth Conference and Speak Out at Monroe High School, 164 Alexander Street, from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., on Saturday, November 8. This year's conference, "Breaking Generational Curses," will focus on ways to break negative cycles that hold back Rochester's low-income communities. Tickets: $3. Information: 697-3464.
Tech zoo
The "Go Green Recycle Rally" at the Seneca Park Zoo will accept most of your old household items: televisions, computers, monitors, printers, DVD players, cell phones, refundable cans and bottles, microwaves, clothing, bedding, and drapes on Sunday, November 9, at the zoo. Most items are accepted at no charge (batteries require a $1 fee). Air conditioners, paints and hazardous materials will not be accepted. The event is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and no appointments are needed. Information: 295-7394.
Midtown rising
The Rochester Downtown Development Corporation will present "Midtown Rising: Unveiling the Proposal for Rebirth," on Monday, November 10, from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center, 123 East Main Street. Reservations: 546-6920 or email to rddc@rddc.org.
Working children on film
The Harvesting Justice Film Festival will present "Stolen Childhoods," a documentary on the global child labor market on Monday, November 10, at the Little Theatre, 240 East Avenue, at 6:30 p.m. Tickets: $10.
Peace vigils
The faith community will hold "Bring Them Home" peace vigils on Thursday, November 6, on the corners of Park Avenue and Culver Road, 7:30 to 8:30 a.m.; and Tuesday, November 11, in front of the First Unitarian Church, 220 South Winton Road, from 4:30 to 6 p.m., and on the corners of Fitzhugh and Broad Street from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
