Police Chief David Moore is crediting the Zero Tolerance initiative with a 12 percent reduction in homicides in 2008. There were 44 homicides last year, down from 50 in 2007. Though a reduction, it's still far short of Moore's goal of cutting the city's homicide rate in half.
In a press release, Moore said that the city is a long way from claiming victory, but that progress is being made.
"I want to improve the pace of that progress and I remain convinced that this is a strategy that is working," he said. "Our goal now is to fine-tune the tactics within that strategy and build on it."
The decline in homicides, the press release says, "appears to have been directly related to a 15 percent decline in fatal shootings, from 39 in 2007 to 33 in 2008."
In 2009, the RPD will tighten its focus on illegal guns and drugs. Uniformed officers will increase their presence in areas where there is known drug activity, the press release says.
