Most of the almost $1 million in renovations to the Highland Park Conservatory are complete. | Construction, which began more than a year ago, was necessary because humidity had caused serious structural deterioration. | Plans are to open the newly renovated portion of the Conservatory by April 1 with the annual spring show. | "We have a completely new structure that was painstakingly made to look like the original," says Larry Staub, Monroe County's director of parks. | The original greenhouse was constructed in 1911, at a time when the country was enamored with them. It remains one of the most important attractions in the park. | The front structure of the Conservatory, which is visible from the street, was completely disassembled to the ground level. The old glass was removed, unbreakable glass was installed, and all of the old wooden window casings were removed and replaced with a metal frame that should ensure the building's survival for 150 years or longer, Staub says. | The turtles and some of the original plants from the Conservatory will return, Staub says, and he is exploring the possibility of adding butterflies to the Conservatory.
