There will be a special meeting of City Council this week so members can send a home-rule message to Albany lawmakers regarding the installation of red-light cameras in Rochester.
A home-rule message is, essentially, a formal request to Albany to pass the legislation.
The State Legislature is getting ready to vote on the legislation, possibly this week, and requested the necessary home-rule message from City Council before the vote.
According to the Assembly version of the bill, which has been introduced in the Assembly by members David Gantt, Joe Morelle, and Susan John, the city of Rochester will be able install the cameras at no more than 50 intersections at any one time.
The cameras will take pictures of red-light runners, who may then be issued tickets.

I'd like to see the city put up some speed-control radars with cameras in selected spots in the city. At least once per year, one of my coworkers gets hit by an automobile on University Avenue. Drivers come off I-490, and are rarely moving close to the speed limit.
