Yep, that's your local industrial development agency advertising in the paper and on television. | They're the ones bringing you the image of that sullen guy staring out from the newspaper with a caption under him that reads: "Somebody should be working to create local jobs for local workers." | The ad push is sponsored by 11 local IDA's, including COMIDA and the Village of Fairport IDA. Greater Rochester Enterprise is also involved in the campaign. | But the promotion goes beyond a few depressing ads. The participants are lobbying specifically against state legislation that would require IDA-assisted projects to pay prevailing wages during construction and would require companies receiving IDA benefits to either match or better the median wage - that's $15.42 hourly in the Rochester area. | "Some of that stuff is very detrimental to the work of IDA's," says Kal Wysokowski, executive director of the Fairport IDA. | There's a flip side - workers with bigger paychecks buy more stuff, which helps the economy. | "In a recession, the government should be stimulating the economy," says Jon Greenbaum, an organizer for the Metro Justice activist group and a frequent IDA critic.
