The city is taking the next step in pursuing red-light cameras. | The Rochester Police Department is seeking requests for proposals from surveillance system vendors this month. The RFP's will help the police department make recommendations to City Council on uses for the cameras. | "I'm not even sure that there's broad support within Council for purchasing the cameras," says City Council member Carolee Conklin. "But I have no problem with them finding out how much it will cost. The figures are more of a management tool for now." | Council members have gotten permission from the state to use red-light cameras, but they have not yet approved buying the cameras. Purchases over $10,000 require Council's approval, Conklin says. | No budget has been set for a potential red-light program, either. | Council will have two work sessions on the cameras, and Conklin says that she is expecting more data from the police department. | "We need to know what intersections have the highest number of accidents, and the times of day that most occur," she says. | The work sessions have not yet been scheduled.
