Green holidays

The Penfield Green Initiative will present "How to Save Money and Energy with Holiday Lighting," a talk with Lee Loomis of the NYS Energy Research and Development Authority, on Monday, September 21, at the Penfield Community Center, 1985 Baird Road, at 7 p.m.

City and county energy savings

The Greater Rochester New York Apollo Alliance will present Anne Spaulding, city senior environmental specialist, and Daryl Maslanka, deputy director of the Monroe County Department of Environmental Services to discuss energy conservation strategies for the city and county on Thursday, September 17, at the Roger Robach Community Center at Ontario Beach Park at 7 p.m.

Home sweet home

The New York State Coalition of Property Owners and Businesses will host "Heading Home," a presentation by the Rochester Housing Council on Thursday, September 17, at 1190 Chili Avenue in Gates at 6:30 p.m. The presentation will provide information supportive of both tenants and landlords to create stability in Rochester's rental housing market.

RAW Afghanistan

Rochester Against War and Peace, Action and Education will show the documentary, "Rethink Afghanistan," followed by a talk with activist Doug Noble on Thursday, September 17, at the First Unitarian Church, 220 South Winton Road, at 7 p.m.

Building with cordwood

Peter Turkow, co-founder of Rochester Green Living, will hold a cordwood sauna workshop on Saturday, September 26, and Sunday, September 27. The workshop will involve building an enclosed sauna with an outdoor deck. Students will learn structurally sound and energy-efficient construction techniques. The workshop will be held at the Turkow residence, 6776 Luddington Road, Elba, N.Y. Tuition: $200 for a single student; $360 for a couple. Women's health screening

The City of Rochester and the UR Medical Center will hold a Women's Health Screening Fair at the Public Market on Saturday, September 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be free screenings for conditions including glaucoma, cardiac and kidney disease, asthma, skin cancer, HIV, lead exposure, and diabetes.

Tax credits for historic preservation

The MacRostie Historic Advisors, the Preservation League of New York, and the Landmark Society of Western New York will present two free web-based seminars to learn more about the recently expanded NYS Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credits for commercial properties. Gender and pop culture

SUNY Brockport will present "Gender and Popular Culture," a discussion about how popular media and music influence our understanding of masculine and feminine experiences on Wednesday, September 23, at Edwards Hall at 7 p.m.

Gas leaks

The Rochester Sierra Club and Rochester Area Vegetarian Society will present George Eisman, author of "The Most Notable Diet," on Sunday, September 20, at Brighton Town Park Lodge, 777 Westfall Road, at 7 p.m. Eisman will discuss the impact of diet on climate change.

Freedom to vote

Nazareth College will celebrate US Constitution Day on Thursday, September 17. The League of Women Voters will register voters from 1 to 3 p.m. Judge Evelyn Frazee, Supreme Court, 7th Judicial District, will talk about responsive government and individual liberties at 4:30 p.m. The event will be held in the Otto Shults Center.

Cooper discusses US Senate run

Downstate legislator Jon Cooper will be discussing his exploratory campaign for the US Senate on Saturday, September 19, at the Bagel Bin Café, Twelve Corners in Brighton, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
