The history of Rochester's LGBT community is the subject of a new documentary film, "Shoulders to Stand On." The idea for the film grew out of discussions about the 30th anniversary of the Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley a couple of years ago, says Evelyn Bailey, the film's executive producer. | "You really aren't in existence as a community - as a culture - until your history is documented," she says. | The film will cover Rochester's early historical figures, Bailey says, such as Susan B. Anthony. Anthony's influence on women's issues is still being felt generations later, Bailey says. | The film will also examine the 1970's, when discrimination against gays in housing and employment was first being challenged. | People may not know that former Rochester Mayor Bill Johnson played a critical role in getting the original funding for the Gay Alliance, one of the country's longest operating agencies of its kind. Johnson was still with the Urban League at the time, and there was tremendous opposition to funding for the Alliance. | Bailey says that she would like to have the film completed in time for next year's Image Out festival. | Stories can be shared at www.shoulderstostandon.org.
