This week's calls to action include the following events and activities. (All are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.)

Recycle Rochester

Green Earth Ventures will sponsor "Recycle Rochester" from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 24, at St. Monica Church, 831 Genesee Street. Electronics will be accepted, including computers, laptops, televisions, printers, and telephones. Fees: monitors, $6; televisions, $10.

Plight of migrant farm workers

Four area Universalist congregations and the Center for Sustainable Living will present "Migrant Farm Workers in the Northeast," a talk with Alejandra Molina, dean of Intercultural Affairs at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, and attorney Wally Ruehle at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, October 23, at First Unitarian Church, 220 South Winton Road.

Prayer vigil

A multi-faith coalition of advocates for justice for farm workers will hold a prayer vigil at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 21, at St. Mary's Church, St. Mary's Place (near Geva).

Film on Liberian women's movement

The Religious Studies department at St. John Fisher College will show the film "Pray the Devil Back to Hell" at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 22, in Basil Hall. The film tells the story of the Liberian women's peace movement.

SDS convention

Students for a Democratic Society will hold its Northeast Regional Convention at the University of Rochester in Dewey Hall starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, October 23, through 5 p.m. Sunday, October 25. There will be Workshops ranging from gender and race issues to knowing your rights in the workplace. Information: 360-8546.

Migration of Mexico's poor

Witness for Peace, RIT, and the Rochester Committee on Latin America will sponsor "Why We Migrate: Stories of Mexico's Displaced," a talk by Paola Gutierrez Galindo, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 21, in the George Eastman Building at RIT. Galindo is a community organizer working with indigenous communities in Oaxaca, Mexico. She will talk about the causes and impacts of people leaving their homes and coming to the US for work.

Rally to improve city schools

Downtown United Presbyterian Church will host a rally to promote improvements in the Rochester City School District at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 24, at 121 North Fitzhugh Street (across from City Hall). Guests include City Council member Adam McFadden, Bishop Christopher Tillman, and former City School Board members James Bowers and Shirley Thompson.

The high cost of cheap

RIT will host Ellen Ruppel Shell, author of "Cheap: The High Cost of Discount Culture," at 4 p.m. on Thursday, October 22, in the College of Liberal Arts Building. Shell discusses her book and the impact of America's obsession with low-cost goods and services.

Candidates sound off about noise

The Rochester Soundscape Society will hold a forum with city, town, and county candidates to discuss noise pollution at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 22, at Aquinas Institute, 1127 Dewey Avenue.
