This week's calls to action include the following events and activities. (All are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.)
Healing the urban community
UJIMA Rochester, The University of Rochester, Excellus, the City of Rochester, and St. John Fisher College will sponsor "A Time for Healing, Education, and Rebuilding," a two-day conference exploring the socio-cultural trauma of the urban community on Friday, October 30, and Saturday, October 31. Joy Leary-DeGruy, author of "Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome, America's Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing," is the keynote speaker. The conference is at Radisson Hotel Rochester Riverside, 120 East Main Street. Cost is $70 for both dates of the conference, $40 for students. Reservations: 458-5245.
Murder, justice and forgiveness
As part of the Western New York Restorative Justice Conference, Friends of the Rochester Public Library will host a talk by Katy Hutchinson, author of "Walking After Midnight" at noon on Friday, October 30, at the Central Library, Kate Gleason Auditorium, 115 South Avenue.
Pearl jam
FODfest, Friends of Daniel [Pearl], the award-winning journalist captured and murdered in Pakistan, will celebrate Daniel's life from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, October 30, at Java Junction Café, Brockport.
The Honduran coup up close
The Rochester Committee on Latin America will present attorney and human-rights activist Grahame Russell, who will give an "Eyewitness Account of the Honduran Coup and Return of President Zelaya" at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, November 4, at Downtown Presbyterian Church, 121 North Fitzhugh Street.
Politics and race
Friends of the Rochester Public Library will present a discussion with attorney and former NYS Assembly member Tom Frey about the book "Breakthrough," by PBS senior correspondent Gwen Ifill, at 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3, at the Central Library, Kate Gleason Auditorium, 115 South Avenue.
Palestinian life
The First Unitarian Church of Rochester will present "Life in Occupied Palestine: Eyewitness Stories and Photos," a lecture by Fulbright scholar and author Anna Baltzer at 7 p.m. on Sunday, November 1, at 220 South Winton Road. Baltzer gives her account on the conflict and the joint Palestinian and Israeli nonviolent resistance movement.
Peace vigil
The Buddhist Peace Fellowship will hold its monthly vigil at noon on Monday, November 2, at the Federal Building, 50 State Street.
Meet the candidates
Community Advocates for Educational Excellence will hold a Meet the Candidates forum at 10 .m. on Saturday, October 31, at the Central Church of Christ, 101 South Plymouth Avenue (next to the Rochester Board of Education office).
