This week's calls to action include the following events and activities. (All are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.)

Life on the farm

The Center for Sustainable Living will sponsor an exhibit of photographic panels of contemporary and historic images that explore the nature of farm work, the changing population of farm workers, and the public's understanding of food production. The exhibit will be on display from Wednesday, October 7, through Tuesday, November 17, at First Unitarian Church, 220 South Winton Road. The text is in English and Spanish, and is suitable for all grade levels.

Green tour

Finger Lakes Community College will hold a "Go Green Tour" of a wind farm in Cohocton; a state-of-the-art industrial recycling center in Stanley; an organic agriculture cooperation with a worm farm in Seneca Castle; and two Bloomfield homes powered by wind, solar, and geothermal sources. The tour is on Saturday, October 10 at 9 a.m. Cost: $45 per person; includes lunch. Reservations and information: 394-3522, Ext. 7421.

Revenge of the Funk

Students for a Democratic Society will present "Funk the War II: Revenge of the Funk!" The "mobile-antiwar-dance party" will be held on Wednesday, October 7, in Washington Square Park (near Geva) from 4:30 to 7 p.m. The group advocates ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, not permitting military recruitment in public schools, and increasing education funding.

Author discussion

Friends of the Rochester Public Library will present a discussion of "Hands of My Father" by author Myron Uhlberg on Tuesday, October 13, from 12:12 to 12:52 p.m. Reviewer Pat Medgett-DeCaro will talk about Uhlberg's memoir of growing up in Brooklyn during the Great Depression as a hearing boy with deaf parents in a less politically-correct time.

Human rights talk

SUNY Brockport will present a talk by Ruben Carranza, senior associate at the International Center for Transitional Justice, on Monday, October 12, at 2:30 p.m. at Seymour College Union Ballroom. Carranza works on criminal prosecutions for human-rights violations throughout Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

I'm coming out

As part of its National Coming Out Day celebration, Nazareth College will host a talk by Richard Ognibene, recipient of the 2009 Horace Mann Award for Teaching Excellence, on Tuesday, October 13, at 7 p.m. in the Shults Center Forum.
