The County Parks Department will enter the new year with two major projects simmering: developing the first-ever master plan for Powder Mills Park in Pittsford-Perinton, and making as-of-yet unspecified improvements to Greece Canal Park.
The department is choosing a consultant to lead the master plan process. From there, the department will host a public input session. Parks advocates stress that Powder Mills has a number of important plant and animal species and ecosystems that should be inventoried and protected.
The county has $2 million to spend on improvements to Greece Canal Park. Officials held a public input meeting last week and the suggestions will be priced out and presented for further discussion.
Suggestions included habitat protection, sports fields, connecting and building trails, addressing persistently wet trails, and protecting park boundaries from encroaching development.
A number of speakers suggested adding an entrance off of Manitou Road to ease access for park users coming from the west. The 661-acre park's only entrance is from Elmgrove Road. But speakers also worried that a Manitou entrance might get unwanted use as a cut-through between Manitou and Elmgrove. A new road could also harm natural areas of the park.
Dick Spade, a parks advocate and Greece resident, says one effective and less-costly idea is to build the entrance, have it quickly empty into a parking lot, and then connect the lot to the rest of the park via trails.

Now I have a question - the photo plainly shows that the name of this park is "Powder Mill Park". Someone may have stolen the "s" on "Mill", sure, but I always thought that the true name of this park was "Powder Mill Park" and not *Mills*. Even Monroe County's website states the name with *Mills*. I do believe the official name really is "Powder Mill Park" - does anyone have any ideas on this? On another note, I found it rather macabre to post a quote from Christine Sevilla within this article, but hey, that's just my opinion.

Stickler,
as it is a county park, we went by the county's spelling, which is clearly "Powder Mills Park."
Regarding the quote by Ms. Sevilla: An early version of the story was mistakenly posted this morning. The story that appears in this week's print edition does not include Ms. Sevilla's comments. The error has been corrected and we regret if the mistake caused Ms. Sevilla's family and friends any additional pain.

Thanks for the update. I wish I knew the story behind the apparent change, if any. I still believe the county is wrong, LOL. I don't even know what a "Powder Mill" even is! Is Sheldon Fisher still alive?? - I'm sure he would know the proper spelling.

Yes, it's Powder Mill Park. No "s".
Was it inappropriate to use Christine Sevilla's quote? I don't think so. Her work to protect our special, fragile natural places from careless, thoughtless uses is one of her legacies. Not to include her comments, to forget her passions, would be worse.

Christine, her family and her friends would want her quote printed. She worked long and hard to have her voice heard and to silence her now would be unjust, even ironic.

Please keep Christine's quote in the article. She was passionate about the parks
and we would all like to remember her hard work on their behalf.
