This week's calls to action include the following events and activities. (All are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.)
Rally against troop surge
Progressives in Action and Progressive Democrats of the Genesee Valley will hold a rally at the Rochester War Memorial to protest the troop increases for Afghanistan, and then march to the Federal Building, on Friday, December 4. The rally will begin at 3:30 p.m.
Alternative Fair
Metro Justice will hold its 28th Annual Alternative Fair from 6 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, December 4, and 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 5. Hundreds of fair trade, earth friendly, and locally made toys, clothing, jewelry, and crafts will be for sale at First Unitarian Church, 220 South Winton Road. Donation: $3.
‘Sicko!' relapse
Rochester for HR 676 will show documentary filmmaker Michael Moore's provocative film, "Sicko!" about the state of the country's health-care system at 7 p.m. on Monday, December 7, at Cinema Theatre, 957 South Clinton Avenue. Admission: $2.
Faith debate
SUNY Brockport will host Christopher Hitchens, author of "God is not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything," and Rabbi David Wolpe, author of "Why Faith Matters," in a debate called "Why Does God Matter?" at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, December 2. Brockport students with ID: $2; all others $10.
Praying for a cure
A World AIDS Day interfaith service will be held on Wednesday, December 2, at Immanuel Baptist Church, 815 Park Avenue. A free supper is at 5:15 p.m. and the service begins at 7 p.m.
Health-care discussion
RIT will host a Health Communication Symposium from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, December 7. Rep. Eric Massa and Assembly member Susan John are guests in a discussion about improving public awareness and communication about living healthy lifestyles, health policy, and improving outcomes.
Peace vigils
Peace vigils to bring home the troops will be held on Thursday, December 3, at Park Avenue and Culver Road from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., and on Tuesday, December 8, in front of the First Unitarian Church, 220 South Winton Road, at 4:30 p.m.

The Buddhist Peace Fellowship will hold its monthly vigil at noon on Monday, December 7, in front of the Federal Building, 100 State Street.
A look at Palestinian society
Independent Palestinian filmmaker Elia Suleiman's feature portrait of Palestinian middle class, "Chronicle of a Disappearance," will be shown at 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 3, at the Dryden Theatre, Eastman House on East Avenue. Regular ticket prices apply.
