Every street in the neighborhood had them: 8 1/2-feet tall black iron posts with gothic lettering spelling out "Browncroft" on all four sides. But vandals, collectors, and time robbed the neighborhood of nearly all of the posts, which date back to Browncroft's founding in the early 20th century.
The posts used to have signs attached at the top, bearing the names of the individual streets. But those have long since broken off, says Ivan Lennon, a member of the Browncroft Neighborhood Association.
Lennon has been leading a campaign to get the once-lost Beresford Road marker restored to its original home at the corner of Beresford and Blossom Roads. The marker was rediscovered in the 1980's by Peter Korn, a former Rochester city manager who lived in the Browncroft neighborhood. The marker was lying neglected in Korn's back yard, Lennon says.
Korn restored the marker and erected it in his front yard. After Korn moved out, the marker disappeared, Lennon says. It was hidden in a garage for 15 years, he says.
"Some people knew where it was, some people didn't," Lennon says. "The ostensible reason for retaining it was they wanted to use it for a template, because they wanted to have others made. But 15 years elapsed."
Lennon reclaimed the marker and says that city officials will restore it to the corner of Blossom and Beresford before BNA's February meeting.
"It's been residing with the Department of Environmental Services for some months now," he says.
Two other posts have survived in Browncroft: one at the corner of Ramsey Park and Corwin Road, and the other at Windemere and Newcastle.

There is a FOURTH Browncroft marker in existence. It's located in the village of Brockport on Adams St. It's been on this front lawn for many years & is painted green. The Browncroft Neighborhood Assoc. & Ivan Lennon know of it (I talked with Ivan last week). He's discussing the return of this marker with the owner of that Brockport property.
