WXXI, in partnership with City Newspaper and WDKX, will present a live, two-hour forum on April 1 on mayoral control of the Rochester school district.

Panel members will be Mayor Bob Duffy, School Board President Malik Evans, and Joseph Viteritti, a Hunter College professor who has done extensive research on the experience of cities with mayoral control.

Viteritti is the editor of "When Mayors Take Charge: School Governance in the City," a compilation of articles and case studies on the topic. He was executive director of the Commission on School Governance in New York.

The WXXI forum will consist of debate among the panelists and questions from audience members and three media representatives: Bob Smith, host of WXXI's 1370 Connection; Liz Medhin, co-host of WDKX's Wake Up Club; and Tim Louis Macaluso, education writer for City Newspaper. WXXI News Director Julie Philipp will be the moderator.

The forum will air from 8 to 10 p.m. from the WXXI studios. Audience members will be chosen from among Rochester residents who participated in a poll on mayoral control, being mailed out this week. Conducting the poll: the Center for Governmental Research and Metrix Matrix, a local opinion-research firm.

The forum will be on radio and television so that the largest possible audience can see it.

Are there only going to be the three above mentioned individuals invited to be a panelist for this debate? There also should be some parents and students of RCSD who are both proponents and opponents to the the proposed mayoral control. It would be a major oversight to not have those voices present. They are the end users and the ones who would be most impacted by any change!!! A debate without their perspective would be disprespectful and counter-productive!

Even if there are only three, I believe it's a good start and I applaud the organizers. (More than three panelists might detract from an orderly expression of ideas and opinions.
However, I do hope that among those people polled this week, and therefore in attendance, are parents(students too!) and teachers. Like Nancy Sung Shelton commented, anything else would be counter-productive.

Do you want an urban success story, do you want to quickly turn around a city and school district in need of life support, do you want to give your students hope and excitement for the future, do you want to remove all politics from the equation, do you want parents and concerned city officials to get the best bang for their buck? Turn to what has worked consistently in the past when attempted in every big city. The answer is Vouchers. Let little Dequan or little Oprah approach the school leaders of Pittsford, Greece, Faiport, Aq, Finney, Northstar, McQuaid, Mercy or Irondequoit etc. with a $22, 000 coupon and see what results come of that . Maybe then you can stop giving Franklin High School three different names just to prove in your own mind that things are going well and that you are worth your salary, and that charter schools are nothing more than the old problem with a new expensive paint job.
