The Rochester Teachers Association Local 616, BENTE/AFSCME Local 2419, Rochester Police Locust Club, AFSCME Local 1635, and Local 1071 are calling for a boycott and picket of the Mayor's Ball on Saturday, March 20. In a letter signed by RTA President Adam Urbanski and BENTE President Dan Clemente, union leaders are seeking union solidarity against mayoral control.
"The statistics associated with the current school system are something to be addressed," the letter states. "But let it be known that a mayoral control takeover would be downright devastating."
The letter also signals the building trades' disappointment with Ren Square and the progress of the school modernization program, which it says puts the interests of developers ahead of construction workers.
