Maffei backs health bill

Congress member Dan Maffei has gotten off the fence. In a press conference this morning, Maffei said he supports the Senate-approved health-care bill.

"I'm proud to support this legislation, because it is going to expand coverage, lower costs and finally stop so many of the unfair practices insurance companies have been using for too long," he said. "While the reform process isn't pretty, we've debated this bill long enough. In fact, we've talked about reforming health care for decades. Doing nothing is no longer an option."

This gives House Democratic leaders one more vote in the "yes" column. But they still don't have enough votes to pass the legislation.

Maffei had several concerns about the Senate legislation, including the lack of a public option and the impact that fees on medical device makers would have on manufacturers in his district.

In a statement this morning, Maffei listed what he sees as the benefits of the legislation: tax credits for small businesses to purchase coverage, prohibiting insurers from dropping subscribers who get sick, and providing relief to seniors who fall under the Medicare donut hole.

Dan - please do not solicit for your vote, again, on Stanwood Lane, Manlius. We are in the process of sending our petition to you in reference to your decision to vote YES on the Democratic Healthcare Program. What reference did you use stating that the majority of your constituents are in favor of the healthcare program? Also, what does student loans have anything to do with Healthcare?

Please provide information stating where you will have town hall meetings when you return.
